Pom Wonderful Decor

by coconutgoddess on November 28, 2010

in DIY,Featured

I was recently very fortunate to be chosen as a finalist  to host a Pom Wonderful Party. The assignment was to create a pomegranate inspired dinner complete with Pom inspired decor! To read the entire recap, simply visit my food blog. For instructions to create the handmade decor pieces, see below.

Eat-Pray-Love

I have never seen the movie or read the book, but these three words truly sum up my love of food, friends, and family. To create little grouping is both east and fun.

supplies

  • white glue – Elmer’s school glue is perfect for this project
  • foam brush
  • art glitter – Martha Stewart choose two or three similar red/crimson shades
  • cardstock – kraft (or white)
  • template
  • printer
  • glass stands or other decorative base

1. working in sections, apply a thin layer of glue to the pomegranate, then sprinkle with glitter. shake off extra and repeat until the entire fruit is covered. Let dry completely – about an hour.

2. once dry, use a soft brush to remove any extra glitter than may not have stuck to the glue. set aside.

3. using the template, print the the words eat – pray – love onto cardstock and trim. (sized to 4×6)

4. cut two small slits into the crown of the fruit to hold the cards in place. set the fruits onto small glass stands.

Pom Menu

To keep the POM theme going, I created these individual menus. A detail that may be difficult to see in the photo is the glittered POM. It is adhered to the card using foam tape, giving it a little pop of dimension.

supplies

1. Using the template, cut out the little poms. to make this task go faster, I happened to use my Silhouette electronic cutter and a homemade cutter file. Of course if you don’t have a cutter you can just use the printable template and some good old fashioned scissors.

2. Once you have the POM cut out, simply brush with glue and apply glitter. Set aside to dry.

3. Print out your menu onto small cards. Mine are sized to 4×6 but you can do what ever size you prefer.

4. Adhere the little POMS to the top of each card using a little bit of foam tape.

Apothecary Jars and Bowls

A super fast and easy centerpiece! Just fill some apothecary jars with fresh POM and faux autumn leaves for an almost instant decor. The best part, you can eat the centerpiece after your event! For a little extra sparkle, try filling a simple glass bowl with the fresh fruit topped with just a single glittered POM.

Ok. So as I mentioned I have basically been MIA for most of OCT. But I have to say that this week I am really feeling it. Its odd, I have been so busy that the thought of coming and crafting a blog post has made me ill to my stomach. So have avoided it like the plague.

But after an insane six weeks of travel, family, crazy work schedules, and all that life has been throwing my way lately… I am feeling that spark again. My dear friend Jessica Sprague and I were on the Paperclipping Rountable together this week. (I will post once it is live of course) And she said something that really inspired me. The topic was about story telling. And she said something to the effect of… you just have to show up. Well. Here I am. And I am committed, to showing up.

I wanted to point out a new section of my blog. Being a mother is always challenging. It is the worlds hardest job. But being a single mother has its own set of obstacles and craziness to it. Lately I have been inspired to share some of these stories from my day to day life. But I don’t want to drop in those sometimes serious or grey clouds smack dab between a turorial for creating a paper wreath and layout! So in the side bar categories you will find “Diary of a Single Mom“. This is where I will post all the tender tidbits of my day. I know I am not alone. Single or married, being a mom can make you feel like an island. But we are so not alone. We are in a club, and if just one person can read this and not feel so lonely or discouraged… well, it will be totally worth getting it out there.

Thanks for following my on my adventures in both life and all things crafty.

I am so thrilled to be the guest designer over at Making Memories today. Be sure to swing by their blog and check it out!  Getting this post together is the perfect kick of to my creative daily.*

Here’s a little sneak peek…

As I mentioned in my guest blog post, I LOVE the new Vintage Groove line. It is so eclectic and fun to put together the various pieces to create unique wearable art. Last night I put this necklace together in just a few minutes.

I love mixing things up. Here I used the the silk ribbon piece and a pendant from the collection. The string of freshwater pearls and the crystals I already had lying around. In fact, the crystals hanging from the 3 wishes component were rescued from a broken bracelet.

The pendants are an easy way to spruce up some of the jewelry you may already have. This necklace with wood beads was something my mom brought back from the Philippines. I just added the pendants to it and now, it is a necklace perfect for summer!

For more ideas, stop by the Making Memories blog and check out their jewelry website MakingMemoriesJewelry.com. Also, make sure you check out the Making Memories’ Jewelry FB page , mark that you “like” it, post a comment, and you’ll be entered into a DAILY drawing to win Vintage Groove.

*Creative Daily- I started the year with the intention of creating a layout a day. But after some time I realized that I don’t want to do a layout a day. I do however, want to do something creative everyday. What this is will change. Sometimes it will be a small project.. like sprucing up a picture frame. Other times, it will be a larger project. What ever it is – I hope you will stop by and join in for create daily juju!
