Paper Dreams

It has been no secret that my creative mojo has been pretty low these days. Some heartbreaking news is that Hambly Screen Prints is no more. One of my favorite paper lines of all time, its hard to see them go. I remember taking a tour of the plant back in the Scrapbook Answers days! As a tribute to Allison Kreft-Abad - one of the most talented designers I know – here is a flashback of some of my Hambly filled projects.

On a recent episode of the Paperclipping Roundtable, I mentioned that I sometimes create a layout with little to no embellishments. Anyone who knows me was shocked at such a statement… for good reason. I would not by any stretch of the imagination call my self a minimalist scrapbooker. I actually prefer embellishment overload! But even I have my relatively minimal days…

My tips for going spare?

  • Gorgeous photos need little embellishment. That is always true. (I am not a very good photographer.)
  • Strong papers stand well on their own. The science fair layout was created on a single piece of patterned paper.
  • Texture – The first beach page has a some homemade sand paper. (using sand from the beach the  pictures were shot at) When choosing cardstock, choosing one with subtle texture makes a huge difference.
  • Die-cut paper – Another fun element that serves as an embellishment on its own.
  • Check out simple scrappers like Cathy Z, Stacy Julian, and Ali Edwards (sometimes minimalist) for some stunning examples and inspiration! I am the first to admit, minimalist is not exactly my specialty.

Next up… embellishment OVERLOAD!

When I made this little project I was inspired by the Holiday houses you often see cropping up around Christmas. I made this particular line of houses a couple years ago… and still love it.

This set I did last year, its smaller than the first but I love the little 3D elements. I think this weekend I will have to create a new set of little homes. I think doing it three years in a row constitutes a tradition right?

These little wired flowers add a touch of whimsy to any floral arrangement… paper or otherwise! I created them in white to coordinate with our overall theme, but they can easily be created to match any color scheme.

For each flower, you will need…

  • 1 piece of 24 gauge floral wire (we chose white wrapped, but you could also use unwrapped, green, or brown)
  • 2 flower die cuts* (these were cut using the eclips)
  • hot glue gun
  • 2″ piece of bamboo skewer (this is a great way to use the trimmed pieces from the other flowers)

1. Fold the floral wire in half, about 1/2″ from the end of the bent tip - twist the other onto the end of the skewer.

2. Dip the tip into the hot glue and pick up a little blog.

3. Sandwich the glue blob between two flowers. Hold in place until set.

4. When adding into your arrangement, allow the flower to hang past the rest of the flowers… it will give the bouquet added style and movement.

GIVEAWAY! Leave a comment and one lucky winner will receive a paper flower kit. It includes everything you need to create a finished centerpiece. Not only cute for a wedding, but great for spring time decor. Modern in plain white, or perfect for spritzing with your favorite sprays. Winner announced later this week. See you tomorrow!

The wedding countdown is well underway… I am up to my eyeballs with paper goodies. These flowers are going to make fantastic centerpieces. Making them is fun, and I have them in a variety of flower types. My new eclips* has become a very key part of the process – taking all the work out of cutting the flowers.

To create a centerpiece, you will need to start by making the flower picks. To go with our homespun theme, I decided to keep the sticks bare, and use only white paper. Of course you can paint the sticks to match or coordinate with your colors. Printed papers with small patterns also look very cute. This tutorial covers the daisy, which is a double flower.

Pantone’s Color of the Year is Honeysuckle 18-2120. Love it or hate it?

It goes without saying that I LOVE IT.Crafting in this color palette makes me happy! And It was nice to see so many fun scrapbook papers and embellishments are being released in this color family. I love it so much in fact,  I decided to refresh my blog with the color.

House Beautiful’s annual color issue is all about PINK!

And it is totally inspiring. Even if the thought of pink walls makes you cringe, you have got to check out the issue. There are lots of surprising ways pink was used… that I think would be fun to pull into a scrapbook page or card. Of course the issue just makes me want to continue my quest to have a pink wall in every room of the house.

GIVEAWAY ALERT: Let me know what you think. Honeysuckle… pink… love it? hate it? One winner from each side… love and hate will get a fun prize package. The love its will get a pink gift package to brighten their day… and one “hate it” gal will get a black prize package. {who doesn’t like black} If you are neutral… you are in the running to win both! Winner announced Monday 2/28.

And join me the rest of the week for some “pretty in pink” inspired projects.
