I have been working on some ginormous deco pieces that even Elf himself would be proud of! Here is the first in that series. These giant snowflakes are really simple to make. The whole project only took about 20 min. from start to finish.  And don’t miss the details of the latest GIVEAWAY at the end of this post!

So.. I had this fantastic idea to create some banners and tack them onto an old window and hang it up on my wall. Step one.. banners accomplished. NOW – getting the thing on the wall in a manner that the window won’t come crashing down on someone’s head – still working on that. But here it is. Of course, you could make the banners sans window and just hang them  up anywhere you please! {which happens to be my plan B}

Here is the finished project. {excuse the terrible photography}

DIY Christmas BannersStart by cutting out your letters. I cut “MERRY” using my eClips – setting the letters to about 3″. The paper is American Crafts POW glitter paper. {this paper has changed my life}

DIY Christmas Banner Punch two small holes at the top of each letter and string onto some bakers twine.

Next, I cut out more letters for my sign – but this time mounted them onto Hambly Screen prints printed overlays. With very thin die cuts

Finally.. I added some trim to the top of each letter.

The whole project only took about an hour! I hope you will try this with your own color scheme. And… I will post a picture of this on my wall once I find a way to get it up there without killing my loved ones.

Don’t forget to leave a comment to win a fun prize! Today’s prize is an ECHO PARK holiday kit of your choosing! Winner announced this Friday.

So my family and I have decided to try do something creative each day this holiday season. It’s a chance to just have a little fun and connect in the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle. I created this little ornament that is super quick and easy to put together.  My little one loves to paint on the glue and glitter each piece. And I finish them off with a little embellishment.

And here are some variations.

Materials: Die Cut (Sizzix round ornament 3D), flake glitter (Martha Stewart Crafts - available at Michael’s), German Glass Glitter (Meyer Imports), button and crepe paper (Jenni Bowlin).

Begin by cutting out the ornament. I used my Sizzix and cut the blanks from mat board for extra sturdiness. You could also cut cardstock by hand and adhere a few layers together for added stiffness.

Working on one side, brush adhesive on the surface of the ornament. While still wet, sprinkle with the glitter flakes. Shake off the excess glitter and repeat with the other side.

Gather the crepe paper into a small rosette and staple to secure. Remove the foam adhesive from the back of the button (if using Jenni Bowlin) and glue the button to the center of the rosette with hot glue.  Glue the rosette to the top of the ornament.

Tips:

  • Whenever I make ornaments and other home decor items, I try to use matboard or chipboard so that the shape is really stiff.
  • Use colored mat board and you won’t have to paint, saving on time.. and clean up.

When I made this little project I was inspired by the Holiday houses you often see cropping up around Christmas. I made this particular line of houses a couple years ago… and still love it.

This set I did last year, its smaller than the first but I love the little 3D elements. I think this weekend I will have to create a new set of little homes. I think doing it three years in a row constitutes a tradition right?

New to the blog for 2011 is Craft Geek. Each Tuesday I will share some of my favorite crafty, techie tips, apps, and techniques. This is not about digital scrapbooking really – but about how to use technology to enhance your creative and crafting experience. I do start with a little disclaimer that this this post will be iphone and ipad app heavy, but not exclusive. Bottom line is, I blog what I know, and well… apps are  big part of my daily life! That said… here we go!

PRINTING FROM THE iPHONE and iPAD

The ability to print directly from the iphone (and ipad) is such a joy. Particularly awesome when I just want to get that memory off the camera and onto a page, or into a card to send off. There are quite a few ways to accomplish this. The two simplest ways – the methods I use, require that you have your printer on your wireless network. If you print from your laptop to your printer without having to plug in… you are already good to go.

1.  Epson iPrint

If you have a wi-fi Epson printer (I am running an Artisan 700) this is the way to go. The app is free and allows you to adjust all the print settings, such as paper type, size, output, etc.

Keep in mind, this free app only prints pictures. So if you play around with your images in another app – like plastic bullet, be sure to save the image to your photo library. At this time, Epson iPrint does not support document, web, or email printing.

2. Print and Share

This app allows you to print to MOST wi-fi printers and ALL printers that are on your network via the free WePrint software that works together with this app. It is a fully features app, that for most crafters is more than they need. (see here for full list) But this app is great for printing pictures, emails, snippets from the web, documents, and more.  If the list of features leaves your head spinning, or is simply just more than you want/need – I recommend Print for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Brought to you by the same peeps but much.

This is a great app, but does require some set up. After installing, take some time to read the getting started info at theEuroSmartz.

3. AirPrint

With the last version of the iOs, Apple enabled AirPrint. If you have not already – be sure to update your phones software. Once you do, when you go to your photo library, you have the ability to print directly from this spot – in theory. The problem at this time, is that you have to have an airprint compatible printer. For more info check out the Apple website for more info. I don’t own any of these printers, so no AirPrint for me…:(

Do you print from your iphone or ipad? What method do you use? If you try one of these, please leave a comment and let me know how it goes! And be sure to join me next week for more Craft Geeketry!
