everything else

Arts and crafts has always been an interest of mine, but it isn’t for everyone. The likelihood is, you probably did something artistic when you were a child, but not everyone maintains that interest, and they only re-discover it when they fancy steering their life in another direction.

For those who have no prior experience, or you have spent more time playing Foxy Bingo, or updating your status on Facebook than creating, making things can seem a daunting task. What if you aren’t good at it? Why does my decoration not look the same as the one in the craft book?

Don’t worry. Practise makes perfect, as the saying goes. If you are sceptical, here are a few reasons why you should keep at it.

Hobby – You don’t even have to leave the house to make something. OK, so you might need to go to the store to buy some supplies, but you can try things at home.

Cheap – It doesn’t cost a lot. If it is a large art project then it might cost more but, overall creating a project such as a picture frame and decorating it to your liking, is cheaper than buying a generic one.

Bonding – It is a great way to spend quality time with your children, friends, and family. It will bring the children out of their shell and sets the creative juices flowing. You might also find that through watching their creativity, you are inspired yourself.

Creativity – Getting creative can help you in other areas of your life. By using your imagination, you help stimulate creative thinking, which is helpful when the boss asks you to ‘think outside of the box’ at work.

Variation – You can use old memorabilia that are scattered across your house, in draws, behind the sofa, up in the attic. Anything can be turned into a project if you set your mind to it.

Ok. So as I mentioned I have basically been MIA for most of OCT. But I have to say that this week I am really feeling it. Its odd, I have been so busy that the thought of coming and crafting a blog post has made me ill to my stomach. So have avoided it like the plague.

But after an insane six weeks of travel, family, crazy work schedules, and all that life has been throwing my way lately… I am feeling that spark again. My dear friend Jessica Sprague and I were on the Paperclipping Rountable together this week. (I will post once it is live of course) And she said something that really inspired me. The topic was about story telling. And she said something to the effect of… you just have to show up. Well. Here I am. And I am committed, to showing up.

I wanted to point out a new section of my blog. Being a mother is always challenging. It is the worlds hardest job. But being a single mother has its own set of obstacles and craziness to it. Lately I have been inspired to share some of these stories from my day to day life. But I don’t want to drop in those sometimes serious or grey clouds smack dab between a turorial for creating a paper wreath and layout! So in the side bar categories you will find “Diary of a Single Mom“. This is where I will post all the tender tidbits of my day. I know I am not alone. Single or married, being a mom can make you feel like an island. But we are so not alone. We are in a club, and if just one person can read this and not feel so lonely or discouraged… well, it will be totally worth getting it out there.

Thanks for following my on my adventures in both life and all things crafty.

A few years ago, I was totally inspired by a project that Ali Edwards created. She used a printers tray to create a beautiful wall display. Well, its been almost two years since I found and purchased a couple vintage printers trays… and they are still empty.

supplies: Paper, stickers, and journaling cards (“A Walk in the Park” by Echo Park Paper)

But these little inexpensive house shaped trays are really fast to put together. This one I created in just 20 min. using just a single picture. I have also used smaller houses – like the one below - (about 5″x7″ in size) for baby shower gifts. Perfect for a new nursery.

And here is the first little shadowbox house that I made about 4 years ago~
